The brim of this hat is knit first, just a long strand of cabled stitches. Once it’s complete stitches are picked up and the top of the hat is worked in the round. The textural cables provide a cozy, double layer of fabric of the ears.
Without the flashy button this hat makes an excellent mens’ pattern. It can be worked in whatever color or colors the man in question desires. Either of the two larger sizes should work for most men, but for guys with bigger heads (or ladies with curls) you can simply work more repeats of the cable to create an even larger hat.
My CSA farm grows currants – black ones and red ones. We have currant jam, currant wine, and all kinds of other lovely currant products. This pair of hats is named in honor of those delicious berries. Currants are unusual enough to give any meal a special feeling but normal enough to be easily used. That’s how I feel about these hats. The cable around the brim has no background so it creates a scalloped edge. Unusual enough to be different, but it’s still simple rugged item that can be well loved and frequently used.
